Microwave Mug Bread Recipe (Without Oven)
A simple homemade bread recipe using a microwave, with no yeast and no oven. It is quick, soft, and ideal for one person.
Preparation time: 3 minutes Cooking time: 1–2 minutes Total time: About 5 minutes Quantity: 1 serving
Ingredients
-
4 tablespoons all-purpose flour (maida)
-
¼ teaspoon baking powder
-
1 small pinch of salt
-
3 tablespoons milk
-
1 teaspoon cooking oil or melted butter
-
¼ teaspoon sugar (optional)
Detailed Method
Step 1: Prepare the mug
Choose a large, microwave-safe mug. Lightly grease the inside with a little oil or butter so the bread does not stick.
Step 2: Mix the dry ingredients
Add the following to the mug:
-
4 tablespoons flour
-
¼ teaspoon baking powder
-
A pinch of salt
-
¼ teaspoon sugar, if desired
Mix well with a fork to distribute the baking powder evenly.
Step 3: Add the wet ingredients
Pour in 3 tablespoons of milk and 1 teaspoon of oil or melted butter.
Stir until you get a thick, smooth batter. Make sure there are no dry flour pockets at the bottom or around the sides. If the batter seems too dry, add another teaspoon of milk.
Step 4: Cook in the microwave
-
Place the mug in the microwave.
-
Cook on high power for 60 seconds.
-
Check whether the center is set. If it is still wet, microwave for another 10–15 seconds at a time.
-
The total cooking time is usually around 60–100 seconds, depending on your microwave.
Avoid overcooking, as this can make the bread tough or rubbery.
Step 5: Let it rest
Leave the mug undisturbed for 1–2 minutes. The mug will be hot, so carefully remove it using an oven mitt or thick cloth.
You can eat the bread directly from the mug or gently loosen the sides with a knife and turn it onto a plate.
Tips for delicious mug bread
-
For softer bread: Use milk and melted butter.
-
For savory bread: Add black pepper, oregano, or grated cheese.
-
For whole-wheat bread: Replace half the maida with atta and add a little extra milk if needed.
-
For a sweeter version: Add 1 teaspoon of sugar and a pinch of cinnamon.
-
For a toasted finish: Slice the cooked bread and toast it in a frying pan with a little butter.
Important notes
-
Do not use a metal mug or any container that is not microwave-safe.
-
Do not fill the mug more than halfway with batter because the bread rises while cooking.
-
This bread has a soft, cake-like texture rather than the chewy texture of traditional yeast bread.
-
Baking powder is necessary for this quick-rise recipe; yeast is not required.
Serving suggestion: Enjoy warm with butter, jam, cheese, or an omelette for a quick breakfast or snack.
